frankincense essential oil
Frankincense oil has been traded for over 5,000 years and comes from the resin of the Boswellia tree. It has a long history in myth and folk medicine. The oldest known reference was in Egyptian Ebers Papyrus dated to 1500 BC where it prescirbed the resin as a use for throat infections and asthmatic attacks. It was also referenced in Chinese herbal manuscripts by Mingyi Bielu, by and Islamic philospher Ibn Sina who recommended it for tumors, ulcers and fevers, and most notably in the Bible as one of the three gifts given to Jesus by the wise men. Frankincense is highly prized and thought to be worth its weight in gold.
Frankincense contains boswellic acid which may help fight inflammation, a hallmark of auto-immune diseases such as Lichen Sclerosus, Lichen Planus, and Eczema. According to a study Frankincense resins exhibited anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities and might possess anti-cancer activities. Although it is expensive, Frankincense is the largest essential oil ingredient in our Restore Natural Oil Blend and Healing Salve because of its amazing skin healing and restorative properties which support the often severely damaged skin by auto-immune skin disease.
lavender essential oil
Lavender use has been documented for over 2,500 years. The ancient Egyptians used it for perfume, Romans used it in cooking, bathing and to ward off infection and heal wounds, in Medieval and Renaissance France it was used for washing clothes, the ancient Greeks used it to fight insomnia and back aches, in London it was used in the 17th century as a remedy for the plague and it is said that Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with it. Today, it is used around the world for a multitude of wellness uses.
Researchers have found that lavender can combat inflammation, as noted in this 2018 study. Another study showed that it has anti-microbial and anti-fungal effects, with research showing that it can specifically kill Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacteria that may cause eczema. Lavender oil has also been found to heal wounds by stimulating collagen production and evidence suggests that it may help promote tissue growth and is antioxidant.
Due to the skin changes caused by conditions such as Lichen Sclerosus, Lichen Planus and Eczema, lavender essential oil was specifically selected to assist with supporting the skin by providing healing properties, promoting healthy tissue growth. There is evidence to suggest that these skin conditions may be triggered by fungus and viruses which lavender essential oil will also target.
Peppermint Essential Oil
Peppermint has been valued for over 4,000 years, with ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman civilizations using it for digestive and medicinal purposes. The Ebers Papyrus from 1550 BC documents peppermint's use in ancient Egypt, while Pliny the Elder recorded its therapeutic applications in ancient Rome. Medieval monasteries cultivated peppermint in their healing gardens, and it became a cornerstone of traditional European herbal medicine.
Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, which provides natural cooling and analgesic properties that can help soothe the burning and itching sensations commonly experienced with lichen sclerosus. Research has shown that peppermint oil possesses anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it valuable for addressing the inflammatory nature of autoimmune skin conditions. The cooling menthol component can provide immediate relief from discomfort while supporting the skin's natural healing processes. Additionally, peppermint's antispasmodic properties may help reduce muscle tension in affected areas, providing comprehensive comfort for those dealing with lichen sclerosus symptoms.
Rosemary Essential Oil
Rosemary has been revered since ancient times, with early Egyptian, Greek, and Roman cultures considering it sacred and using it for memory enhancement and preservation. The ancient Greeks wore rosemary garlands while studying, believing it improved cognitive function. Medieval herbalists documented its use for circulation and skin healing, while 14th-century Queen of Hungary used rosemary in her famous youth-preserving formula. Traditional Mediterranean medicine has long employed rosemary for its powerful therapeutic properties.
Rosemary essential oil is rich in rosmarinic acid and other potent antioxidant compounds that help combat oxidative stress and inflammation associated with autoimmune skin conditions like lichen sclerosus. Its circulation-stimulating properties can improve blood flow to affected areas, promoting healing and tissue repair. Research demonstrates rosemary's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, which are particularly beneficial for managing the bacterial and fungal complications that can arise with compromised skin barrier function. The oil's astringent properties may also help tone and strengthen weakened skin tissue, while its antioxidant action protects against further cellular damage.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree oil comes from the Melaleuca alternifolia plant, native to Australia, where Aboriginees have used it for centuries to treat cuts, wounds, and skin infections. The name "tea tree" was coined by Captain James Cook in the 1770s when he observed Aboriginees brewing the leaves into a medicinal tea. European settlers quickly adopted its use, and by the early 1900s, scientific research began validating its remarkable antimicrobial properties. During World War II, tea tree oil was included in first aid kits for Australian soldiers.
Tea tree essential oil is one of nature's most powerful antimicrobial agents, containing terpinen-4-ol as its primary active compound. This makes it exceptionally valuable for lichen sclerosus management, as the condition often involves compromised skin barrier function that can lead to secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Studies have demonstrated tea tree oil's effectiveness against various pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, which can complicate autoimmune skin conditions. Its anti-inflammatory properties help calm irritated skin while promoting healthy tissue regeneration. Tea tree oil's gentle yet effective action makes it ideal for sensitive, damaged skin, providing antimicrobial protection without harsh irritation.
Elemi Essential Oil
Elemi oil is derived from the Canarium luzonicum tree native to the Philippines, where it has been used in traditional medicine for over 500 years. Spanish conquistadors documented its use by indigenous Filipino healers for wound care and skin treatment. The resin was highly valued in ancient trade routes, often called "Manila elemi" due to its export through Manila. Traditional Chinese medicine also incorporated elemi for its skin-healing and respiratory benefits, recognizing its unique therapeutic profile among tree resins.
Elemi essential oil possesses remarkable skin regenerative properties, making it particularly valuable for lichen sclerosus treatment where tissue repair and healing are crucial. The oil contains high levels of limonene and elemol, compounds that demonstrate anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. Research indicates that elemi can stimulate healthy cell growth and tissue regeneration, essential for repairing the skin damage characteristic of lichen sclerosus. Its gentle antiseptic properties help prevent secondary infections while its astringent qualities can help tone and tighten affected tissue. Elemi's ability to promote collagen synthesis makes it especially beneficial for restoring skin elasticity and strength in areas affected by this autoimmune condition.
Naiouli Essential Oil
Naiouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia) is native to New Caledonia and Australia, where indigenous peoples have used it for centuries to treat respiratory ailments and skin conditions. French colonists in New Caledonia learned of its healing properties from locals and brought it to wider attention in the 19th century. Traditional Pacific Island medicine valued naiouli for its powerful antiseptic and healing properties, often using it to purify water and treat wounds. Its close relationship to tea tree oil gives it similar but distinct therapeutic characteristics.
Naiouli essential oil contains cineole and viridiflorol, powerful compounds that provide antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerating properties crucial for lichen sclerosus management. Like its tea tree cousin, naiouli effectively combats bacterial and fungal infections that can complicate autoimmune skin conditions, but with a gentler, less sensitizing profile. Its anti-inflammatory action helps reduce the chronic inflammation characteristic of lichen sclerosus, while its tissue-healing properties support the restoration of healthy skin architecture. Naiouli's unique ability to stimulate immune function while reducing inflammation makes it particularly valuable for autoimmune conditions where immune balance is essential for healing.
The combination of these essential oils in our Restore Natural Oil Blend creates a synergistic formula specifically designed to address the multiple aspects of lichen sclerosus: reducing inflammation, fighting infection, promoting tissue healing, and providing symptom relief.
