Elemi Essential Oil

Ancient Healing Resin

When we set out to create Restore Natural Oil Blend, our mission was clear: find the most powerful, time-tested natural ingredients to support skin that is struggling with lichen sclerosus. Every oil in our formula earns its place for a reason. Elemi essential oil is no exception. Though it may be less familiar than some of its botanical cousins — frankincense and myrrh — elemi has a history and a therapeutic profile that made it an obvious choice for Restore. Here's everything you need to know about this remarkable oil.

The Rich History of Elemi Essential Oil

Elemi has been part of human healing traditions for thousands of years, woven into the practices of ancient cultures across multiple continents.

Its story may begin in ancient Egypt, where elemi resin is believed to have been among the very first aromatics used in the embalming of the dead — alongside frankincense, myrrh, galbanum, and Lebanese cedar. But the Egyptians weren't only using it for the afterlife. Historical records document its use in daily skincare preparations, medicinal salves, poultices, healing unguents, and incense. Throughout the ancient Middle East, elemi was prized for its antiseptic properties and its ability to heal scars and wounds.

The name "elemi" itself is thought to derive from the Arabic al-lami, meaning "above and below", a poetic reflection of how this oil was seen as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.

In the Philippines — the homeland of the elemi tree — indigenous communities developed an intimate, multi-generational relationship with the resin. Local healers applied it topically to treat skin ailments and wounds, relied on its antiseptic properties to guard against infection, and used it in spiritual ceremonies and rituals of protection and energetic cleansing. Filipino shamans burned elemi resin as incense to purify spaces and invite healing energies, and its ability to "seal" wounds was seen as symbolic of its power to protect and restore.

During the Age of Exploration, elemi resin made its way to Europe, where it became a valued commodity in medieval apothecaries — used as an antiseptic balm for wounds and as a coveted ingredient in perfumes and early skincare preparations. The word "elemi" shifted meaning across centuries and cultures: in the 17th and 18th centuries, European traders used the term to refer to resins from South American trees, while today it refers specifically to the oleoresin and essential oil originating from the Philippines, known and traded internationally as Manila elemi.

Through every era and culture, the common thread is the same: people recognized elemi as a healer.

How Elemi Essential Oil Is Obtained

Elemi essential oil comes from the Canarium luzonicum tree, a tall tropical evergreen that can reach up to 98 feet in height and belongs to the Burseraceae family — the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh. The tree is native to the lush rainforests of the Philippine islands, particularly Luzon and Mindanao, growing best in lowland areas with rich, moist soil and consistent rainfall. Locally, the tree is known as malapili, and it produces an almond-shaped nut called pili.

The resin itself is contained in channels running through the inside of the tree's bark. When the bark is wounded or incised, the tree produces a white or yellow oleoresin as a natural protective response — essentially sealing its own injuries. This resin hardens on contact with air, turning a pale yellow, waxy colour with a consistency resembling crystallised honey.

Harvesting is done by skilled local tappers using a process that has been refined over generations. Using a wooden mallet and a single-edged machete called a bolo, tappers carefully cut into the trunk to remove strips of bark. New strips are removed every few days to keep the resin flowing. The oleoresin trickles down the bark, is collected, and then cleaned to remove any bark debris before processing.

Elemi trees can be tapped throughout the year, though in regions with a dry season, harvesting happens primarily during the wet season when the resin flows most freely. When done correctly, the tapping process causes minimal harm to the trees and supports the long-term health of the elemi population and the surrounding ecosystem.

Extraction of the essential oil is achieved through steam distillation, a process that uses water vapour to gently release the volatile aromatic compounds from the resin without damaging them. This method preserves the integrity of the oil's beneficial chemistry. Steam distillation of elemi oleoresin yields a remarkably high 15% to 25% essential oil — an exceptionally generous return compared to many other botanicals.

The resulting essential oil is colourless or pale straw in colour, with a bright, complex fragrance: fresh and citrusy at first, with lemon and green top notes, leading to a warm, balsamic, woody drydown with faint spicy undertones. It is often described as similar to frankincense, but lighter and more vibrant.

At LifeWorks Skin Essentials, we source only 100% pure and unadulterated essential oils from a trusted leading supplier — so you can be confident that every drop of elemi in Restore is of the highest quality.

Why Elemi Essential Oil Is Good for the Skin

Elemi's skin benefits are not simply a modern discovery — they are the result of thousands of years of use, now supported by our growing understanding of its chemistry.

Rich in skin-active compounds. Elemi oil is classified as a top note, rich in monoterpenes, primarily limonene and elemol, along with elemicin, alpha-phellandrene, and other beneficial compounds. It is this chemistry that underpins its remarkable range of skin benefits.

Deep moisturization. Elemi oil is particularly effective for dry, dehydrated, and mature skin. It works by improving the skin's water retention, helping to deeply moisturize and maintain a soft, smooth appearance. When blended into a carrier oil, as it is in Restore, it penetrates readily and leaves skin feeling replenished rather than greasy.

Anti-aging and skin regeneration. Elemi has long been a fixture in anti-aging skincare formulations. Its rejuvenating action helps stimulate healthy cell growth and tissue regeneration, improving the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, and dullness. Aromatherapists increasingly reach for elemi as a cost-effective and highly effective alternative to frankincense for enlivening dull, mature skin — and the two oils complement each other beautifully when used together, as they are in Restore.

Collagen synthesis support. Research indicates that elemi can promote collagen synthesis, the process by which skin maintains its elasticity, firmness, and structural integrity. This makes it especially relevant for skin that has lost elasticity due to inflammation, scarring, or the effects of autoimmune conditions.

Natural antiseptic and wound healing. Elemi's antiseptic properties are well-documented across centuries of traditional use and are supported by its active chemistry. Applied to the skin, it helps guard against bacterial, fungal, and microbial infection, a critical property for compromised or broken skin. It has also been shown to support the healing of wounds and scars, reducing their appearance over time.

Anti-inflammatory action. Limonene and elemol both demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties. For inflamed, irritated, or reactive skin, this helps calm the visible signs of inflammation, redness, swelling, and discomfort.

Gentle astringent qualities. Elemi has gentle astringent properties, helping to tone and tighten the skin without stripping it of moisture. This contributes to a firmer, more refined skin appearance and texture.

Aromatic benefits. Beyond its topical action, elemi's fresh, resinous aroma has a grounding, calming effect on the nervous system, a welcome quality for anyone managing the chronic stress and discomfort that accompanies a condition like lichen sclerosus.

The Benefits of Elemi Essential Oil for Lichen Sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is a challenging, often distressing condition that causes significant damage to delicate skin tissue, resulting in inflammation, scarring, thinning, tearing, loss of elasticity, and, in many cases, severe itching and pain. Conventional treatments often focus on managing symptoms rather than supporting genuine tissue restoration. This is exactly where elemi, and Restore Natural Oil Blend, can make a meaningful difference.

Addressing inflammation at the source. The chronic inflammation of lichen sclerosus drives much of the skin damage associated with the condition. Elemi's anti-inflammatory compounds, including limonene and elemol, work to calm inflamed tissue and reduce irritation. For skin that is constantly reactive, this cooling, calming action provides a foundation for healing.

Supporting tissue repair and regeneration. One of the most compelling reasons we included elemi in Restore is its ability to stimulate healthy cell growth and tissue regeneration. For lichen sclerosus, where the structural damage to skin can be severe, this regenerative action is not a luxury, it is essential. Elemi supports the process of rebuilding skin at a cellular level, helping to address the underlying damage rather than simply masking symptoms.

Restoring elasticity and strength. The loss of skin elasticity is one of the most debilitating aspects of lichen sclerosus, causing the affected tissue to become fragile, prone to tearing, and slow to heal. Elemi's ability to promote collagen synthesis makes it directly relevant to this issue, helping to gradually restore the skin's natural elasticity and structural resilience.

Preventing secondary infection. Broken or damaged skin is vulnerable to secondary infection, which can significantly worsen symptoms and slow healing. Elemi's gentle antiseptic properties help create a protective environment, guarding against bacterial and fungal infection without the harshness of synthetic antiseptics.

Toning and tightening affected tissue. The astringent qualities of elemi help tone and tighten tissue that has become lax or damaged — supporting a healthier skin architecture in areas affected by the condition.

Complementing frankincense. In Restore, elemi works in synergy with frankincense, the largest ingredient in our blend, and another resin-based oil with extraordinary skin-healing and restorative properties. The two oils share botanical ancestry and overlapping mechanisms, but each brings its own strengths. Together, they create a more comprehensive and powerful healing effect than either could achieve alone.

Gentle enough for sensitive skin. For women with lichen sclerosus, skin can be extraordinarily sensitive, making the tolerance of any topical treatment a real concern. Elemi is classified as a gentle oil, non-irritating for most individuals when properly diluted, which it is in our carefully formulated Restore blend.

Why We Chose Elemi for Restore Natural Oil Blend

Restore Natural Oil Blend was developed by our founder, a lichen sclerosus sufferer herself, after conventional treatments failed to provide the relief and healing she needed. Every ingredient in Restore was chosen deliberately, based on a combination of historical evidence, contemporary understanding of botanical chemistry, and personal experience.

Elemi earned its place in our formula because it brings together, in a single oil, many of the properties most needed to address lichen sclerosus: anti-inflammatory action, tissue regeneration, collagen support, antiseptic protection, and gentle astringency. Its history as a healer spans thousands of years and multiple civilisations. Its chemistry gives us a sound basis for understanding why it works. And its compatibility with the other oils in our blend, particularly frankincense, means it contributes to a formula that is genuinely greater than the sum of its parts.

If you are navigating life with lichen sclerosus, we want you to know that you deserve a treatment that works with your skin, not against it. Restore was made for you, and elemi is one of the reasons it delivers.

Restore Natural Oil Blend contains a synergistic blend of certified organic essential oils including elemi, frankincense, lavender, peppermint, rosemary, tea tree, and niaouli, carried in a base of extra virgin olive oil, neem oil, camellia seed oil, and fractionated coconut oil.
